2019-20 Premier League: Week 10 – Burnley vs Chelsea

Burnley welcome high-flying Chelsea to Turf Moor for a tasty Saturday evening Premier League clash.

A home win will lift Burnley up to fifth whilst depending on what happens to Leicester then Manchester City, Chelsea could go second if they take victory and extend their winning run to seven games.

Chris Wood is a doubt for Burnley after picking up a hamstring strain in training this week.

Jack Cork (shoulder) and Ashley Barnes (groin) are both expected to return after missing last weekend’s away defeat at Leicester.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson (hamstring) and Danny Drinkwater (ankle) are both definitely ruled out.

Chelsea could have N’Golo Kante available after he missed their last two matches with a groin injury.

Ross Barkley meanwhile is ruled out with an ankle injury picked up against Newcastle last weekend.

Antonio Rudiger (groin), Andreas Christensen (hamstring), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Achilles) and Marco Van Ginkel (knee) are all ruled out.

Form

Burnley saw a four match unbeaten run end last weekend after Leicester came from behind to deny the Clarets victory, although they have won three and lost one of their four home league games.

Chelsea are on a six match winning run across all competitions with three clean sheets, of which just one came away from Stamford Bridge – last time out against Ajax in midweek and are unbeaten in their last three domestic away games.

Stat Attack

  • Burnley have won just one of their last ten meetings with Chelsea (W1, D3, L6).
  • Last October’s 4-0 away win marked Chelsea’s first clean sheet away to Burnley in the Premier League, having conceded in four previous visits beforehand.
  • Despite making five top flight appearances against Burnley as a player with two different clubs, Chelsea manager – Frank Lampard never scored against the Clarets.
  • Only one of Tammy Abraham’s eight league goals for Chelsea came from a header.
  • Burnley are one of two clubs alongside Sheffield United who have already played 600+ long balls this season.

Prediction

I can see a good battle here because Burnley are a good all rounded team who will cause Chelsea some difficulty in defence with their direct play, whereas Chelsea are capable of playing the possession game and pouncing late on as seen in their last two outings.

Both teams are also in decent home/away form respectively which adds extra unpredictability to how this game will play out, but if Burnley play like they did in April at Stamford Bridge then I can see another draw.

Prediction: Burnley 2-2 Chelsea

Result: Burnley 2-4 Chelsea
