2020-21 Premier League: Week Nine – Liverpool vs Leicester

Liverpool welcome Leicester City to Anfield in a blockbuster Super Sunday Night Football clash at the Premier League summit.

Liverpool will leapfrog Leicester into second if they take victory whilst Brendan Rogers’ Foxes know that a win will return them to the top of the Premier League.

Mohamed Salah is ruled out for Liverpool after testing positive for Coronavirus whilst on international duty for Egypt.

England’s Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson are ruled out with respective knee, calf and muscle injuries whilst Rhys Williams (hip) and Neco Williams (foot) are doubts.

Thiago Alcantara and Fabinho could return from respective knee and hamstring injuries if pass fitness checks but Virgil Van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain remain absent with serious knee injuries.

Leicester could welcome Timothy Castagne back from a hamstring injury alongside Wesley Fofana, who returns from a knee injury.

Ricardo Pereira (knee), Caglar Soyuncu (muscle) and Wilfred Ndidi (adductor) are unlikely to be available until early December whilst Daniel Amartey (hamstring) remains sidelined.

Stat Attack

  • Liverpool are unbeaten in their last six matches against Leicester (W5, D1).
  • Leicester have failed to win in any of their last nine trips to Anfield (D2, L7).
  • Both teams have scored in each of their last four clashes at Anfield, with Leicester netting once in each of those four meetings of which two of their four goals coming from Jamie Vardy.
  • Foxes’ Jamie Vardy has scored five penalties in seven league appearances this season compared to four penalties in 35 appearances last season.
  • If Liverpool’s Sadio Mane scores a headed goal then he will become Senegal’s highest headed goal scorer in Premier League history.

Prediction

With Liverpool’s injury crisis constantly getting deeper, I seriously am struggling to see them defending their title because to lose Alexander-Arnold, Gomez and Henderson in terms of defending is a worry, but to lose Salah up front is a huge attacking loss coming into a fixture like this.

I therefore hope that Alcantara is fit to start otherwise Liverpool could be in for serious difficulties in midfield when it comes to creativity, whilst their defending at times has been questionable so a defence containing; Joel Matip, Kostas Tsimikas, Nathaniel Phillips and Andrew Robertson will be a concern.

Leicester meanwhile were absolutely solid throughout their narrow win over Wolves last time out despite wasting several chances, but with several players having had two week rest, I am expecting them to come out fighting because this injury hit Liverpool is there for the taking if the Foxes can be clinical.

Jurgen Klopp however is a quality manager who knows how to get the best out of his starting eleven and Leicester don’t have a strong record at Anfield, so this should be a good match but I am going for a Leicester win if Liverpool don’t show creativity at their home fortress.

Prediction: Liverpool 1-2 Leicester

Result: Liverpool 3-0 Leicester
