Harry Maguire Returns to England Squad

Harry Maguire has been recalled to the England squad for matches against Wales, Belgium and Denmark at Wembley later this month.

Maguire had initially been selected for last month’s squad but withdrew for personal reasons following an incident whilst on holiday in Greece during the post season, which has since been resolved with the Manchester United defender now available for selection as part of a 30-man squad.

Arsenal defender Bukayo Saka is a new addition in defence after impressing in the club’s opening matches of the new season to earn his maiden senior call-up, whilst Ben Chilwell returns after missing last month’s away trips to Iceland and Denmark through injury.

Gareth Southgate has dropped Phil Foden from midfield following a Coronavirus protocol related incident following their opening Nations League win in Iceland, with Jordan Henderson receiving a recall in his place after recovering from injury.

Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood has also been omitted for same reason as Foden and has been replaced by Everton’s Dominic Calvert Lewin who has received his first senior call-up alongside Leicester’s Harvey Barnes.

Last month’s debutants, Jack Grealish, Kalvin Phillips and Conor Coady have all retained their places in the squad alongside James Ward-Prowse, Danny Ings and Harry Winks who all returned after various lengths of absence.

Southgate has named an unchanged goalkeeper selection of Dean Henderson, Jordan Pickford and Nick Pope despite criticism of Pickford but the first-choice role is now set to be in question after criticism of Pickford for mistakes this season.

England will face Wales in a friendly on Thursday 8 October before meeting Belgium and Denmark in UEFA Nations League, with all matches being played at Wembley Stadium.
