2020-21 Carabao Cup Round Four: Tottenham vs Chelsea

Tottenham Hotspur kick off the Fourth Round of this season’s Carabao Cup as they welcome Chelsea to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a blockbuster London derby.

This match marks the second time that Jose Mourinho has come up against Frank Lampard in this competition, with both managers now in charge of London clubs after Lampard had guided Derby past Mourinho’s Manchester United on penalties in third round of 2018-19 edition.

Moussa Sissoko is expected to be available for Tottenham after missing Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle through illness.

Son Heung-min however is unlikely to feature after suffering a hamstring injury in the match and is set to join Gareth Bale (knee) and Japhet Tanganga (thigh) on sidelines.

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard could have Edouard Mendy his debut in goal after the Senegalese goalkeeper missed Saturday’s draw at West Brom due to fitness concerns.

Christian Pulisic (hamstring) and Hakim Ziyech (knee) could feature if can prove their fitness, although it is thought that they won’t be risked until fully fit.

Billy Gilmour and Marco van Ginkel are both definite absentees with knee injuries.

Stat Attack

  • Tottenham have won just one of three League Cup meetings since defeating Chelsea in the 2007-08 Final excluding penalty shootouts (W1, L2).
  • Chelsea have won just one of four away League Cup trips to Spurs (W1, D1, L2).
  • Tottenham are unbeaten in four of their last five League Cup clashes against Premier League opposition, which all came in 2018-19 edition (W3, D1, L1), with their only defeat coming in semi-final second leg at Chelsea.
  • Chelsea have won just two of their last five League Cup matches against fellow top flight opposition excluding penalty shootouts (W2, D1, L2).
  • Ross Barkley has scored in four of Chelsea’s last five matches in all domestic cup competitions excluding games held at Wembley.

Prediction

Tottenham will be hurting after that controversial handball penalty which gifted Newcastle a point on Sunday but if they can channel that infuriation in a positive way, I expect them to come out and deliver another strong attacking performance without Son who will be a huge miss up front.

Chelsea however will also come into this match looking for a positive display after a spirited second-half fightback to draw at West Brom after initially conceding three first-half goals, which will make for an interesting match because neither team can exactly claim bragging rights defensively so far this season in all competitions bar the Blues’ thrashing of Barnsley in the third round.

We therefore should see a good match here because not only is local pride or personal in case of Mourinho and Lampard at stake but also a Quarter-Final spot, yet Spurs do have an Europa League play-off on Thursday so could see squad rotation which might just give Chelsea the edge.

Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Chelsea

Result: Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Chelsea (Tottenham Hotspur win 5-4 on penalties!!!)
