League One’s Lincoln City face a tough test as they welcome Premier League champions, Liverpool to Sincil Bank in a blockbuster Second Round tie of 2020-21 Carabao Cup.
The winner of this tie will host Arsenal at home in the Fourth Round next week.
Lincoln have no fresh injury concerns to report as manager, Michael Appleton prepares to rotate his squad.
Liverpool could have Xherdan Shaqiri available after recovering from a muscle injury, whereas Jordan Henderson is unlikely to feature after being subbed against Chelsea on Sunday.
Joe Gomez is also expected to feature after recovering from a knock that saw him miss the trip to Stamford Bridge, whilst Joel Matip (unspecified) and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (knee) are ruled out.
- This is the first-ever League Cup tie between Lincoln and Liverpool, although these teams met in cup competition before three times in FA Cup (D1, L2), with that non defeat coming at Sincil Bank in January 1955.
- Lincoln have won just one of their last four ties against higher league opposition (W1, L3).
- Liverpool have won each of their last three League Cup ties against League One opposition dating back to August 2011, although two of those games were won away from home whilst their home clash against Notts County in August 2013 went to extra-time before prevailing 4-2.
Lincoln are currently unbeaten this season in all competitions but are going to have to be at their best here against a Liverpool team who have a decent recent record against League One opposition in this competition.
Both teams will rotate their squads but I just can’t see Liverpool losing this given their quality and new signing in Diogo Jota will certainly pose a tough test for Lincoln if he starts.
Prediction: Lincoln City 0-2 Liverpool
Result: Lincoln City 2-7 Liverpool
