HWA Racelab have announced that Jake Hughes will replace Giuliano Alesi in their Formula Two team this weekend at Sochi, Russia, as Alesi switches to MP Motorsport replacing Nobuharu Matsushita.

Hughes’ graduation into F2 comes just over a week since his Formula Three season finished with the Brit finishing seventh after taking two victories throughout that campaign.

Speaking on his promotion into F2, Hughes said; “Many thanks to BWT HWA Racelab for giving me this chance. The Formula 3 season finished recently after nine race weekends in eleven weeks, so I am totally in the racing routine.

“I will have to get used to the cars first, as they have significantly more power than the Formula 3 cars. But I am looking forward to taking on this challenge

BWT HWA Racelab Team Principal, Thomas Strick stated that he was “delighted…” to hand Hughes a chance in F2 this weekend around Sochi Autodrom, praising the Brit for his “… convincing performances as a driver out on the circuit and as a real team player.”

Strick also paid tribute to Alesi’s effort this season in scoring the team’s first points in F2 in the season opener back in July at Austria, as HWA Racelab “… wish him all the best for the future.”

Alesi however is switching to MP Motorsport to replace Nobuharu Matsushita who according to MP Motorsport; “…has decided to move on to fresh challenges elsewhere.”

The Ferrari Junior Academy driver will partner Felipe Drugovich and on his move, Alesi said; “I am super happy, excited and most of all motivated to be working with MP and starting this new adventure in Formula 2.”

MP Motorsport currently sit seventh in constructor standings with 121 points and three race victories, whilst HWA Racelab sit tenth with just 13 points amassed across the opening nine rounds of the 2020 season.
