2020-21 Carabao Cup Second Round: Everton vs Salford City

Everton face a tough launch of their 2020-21 Carabao Cup campaign as they welcome League Two’s Salford City to Goodison Park.

Everton and Carlo Ancelotti begin this campaign in search of their first-ever League Cup title, whilst Salford will be looking to cause a cupset in their very first cup clash against senior Premier League opposition.

Everton have no fresh injury concerns after their victory at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday as Fabian Delph continues to rebuild match fitness after a muscle injury kept him sidelined post-lockdown, although he won’t be risked in this match as part of his recovery plan to regain full match fitness.

Mason Holgate (ankle), Jean-Phillipe Gbamin (Achilles) and Cenk Tosun (knee) are also ruled out.

Salford have no fresh injury concerns after Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Exeter City with a full squad available for selection.

Stat Attack

  • This is Everton’s first-ever meeting against Salford City in all competitions.
  • Salford are unbeaten in seven of their last ten cup matches across all cup competitions (W5, D3, L2) since entering the EFL last season.
  • Everton have won each of their last three cup clashes against League Two opposition without conceding, whilst scoring nine goals across those three matches.

Prediction

After a dominant performance at Tottenham on Sunday in which they displayed high attacking quality and solid defending, Everton will definitely be a difficult team to stop, although rotation of players could very well give Salford a chance if they turn up and are able to immediately take the game to the Toffees.

Do that then anything could happen but otherwise I can see just one result coming if Everton can quickly seize control of this game, given their recent cup form against League Two opposition and Salford have more pressing matters to think about than a deep League Cup run.

Prediction: Everton 2-0 Salford City

Result: Everton 3-0 Salford City
