Racing Point has announced that Sebastian Vettel will partner Lance Stroll as the team switches brand name to Aston Martin from the 2021 Formula One season onwards.

Confirmation of Vettel’s move comes just hours after Sergio Perez announced he will leave Racing Point at end of the 2020 season, with the team revealing in a statement that their decision to sign Vettel ‘is a clear statement of the team’s ambition to establish itself as one of the most competitive names in sport.’

Speaking on his decision to join Aston Martin for 2021 F1 season, Vettel said; “It’s a new adventure for me with a truly legendary car company.

“I have been impressed with the results the team has achieved this year and I believe the future looks even brighter.”

Vettel’s last word echoes that of Lance Stroll from our exclusive interview with the Canadian earlier this week, in which Stroll when asked on Aston Martin plans said; “There’s a bright future ahead in my eyes, bring it on!”

On the question of whether he remains passionate about F1 after a disappointing run of results this season with Ferrari, Vettel said: “I still have so much love for Formula 1 and my only motivation is to race at the front of the grid. To do so with Aston Martin will be a huge privilege.”

Racing Point CEO and Team Principal, Otmar Szafnauer has spoken of Vettel’s “winning mentality” which he believes matches the team’s own future ambitions, especially when it matters most, saying; “On a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, Sebastian is one one the best in the world, and I can’t think of a better driver to help take us into this new era. He will play a significant role in taking this team to the next level.”

Confirmation of Vettel’s move comes four months after the four-time world champion was was informed that Ferrari weren’t renewing his contract which runs out at end of this season.

Racing Point meanwhile announced in January that the team would be rebranded as Aston Martin from next season onwards.
