Phil Neville have named uncapped Manchester United midfielder, Ella Toone in a 30-woman Lionesses training camp squad for mid September 2020.
Toone is amongst seven players who have received their first international call up alongside; Lotte Wubben-Moy, Millie Turner, Esme Morgan, Niamh Charles, Katie Zelem and Rinsola Babajide.
Babajide represents the only call-up from a player outside of the Women’s Super League after Liverpool were relegated on PPG into Women’s Championship at end of last season.
Speaking on his decision to call up several youngsters in place of first-team regulars who play for foreign clubs due to Coronavirus quarantine restrictions, Neville said; “It’s important that we offer as many opportunities as possible for some of the country’s best young talent to stake their claim for a place in the senior England squad for this exciting three-year period.”
Neville’s selection choice comes as England prepare for a busy run across the next three years as they participate in next summer’s Olympics in Tokyo before Sarina Wiegman takes over next Autumn, as the Lionesses host the 2022 Women’s Euro following its postponement from next summer whilst building towards the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand as they participate in World Cup Qualifying from September 2021.
Neville therefore believes that creating ‘greater competition’ for senior places is vital to pushing the team forward, saying; “Introducing greater competition for places and providing opportunities for young players to develop is absolutely key to taking England Women to the next level as we begin the long build towards the home Euro and FIFIA Women’s World Cup.”
The squad will meet up on Tuesday 15 September 2020 with a behind closed-doors 11v11 training match scheduled for Friday 18th September hence Neville’s decision to name a 30 player squad.
