Wembley to Host Community Shield Double-Header

Wembley Stadium is to host a first-ever Community Shield double-header on Saturday 29 August as the Women’s Community Shield returns after a 12 year absence.

2019-20 Women Super League (WSL) winners, Chelsea will face 2019 Women’s FA Cup winners, Manchester City in the first Women’s Community Shield since 2008 when Arsenal defeated Everton at Craven Cottage.

The match will held on Saturday 29 August with a 12:30pm (BST) kick-off live across BBC1 and BBC iPlayer, marking the first competitive match in English football of the 2020-21 season.

Reigning Premier League champions, Liverpool will then play current FA Cup holders, Arsenal in the Men’s Community Shield which will be a 4:30pm (BST) start exclusively live on BT Sport.

This match will mark the final time that BT Sport will broadcast the Men’s Community Shield under the current contract, after ITV picked up the TV rights to the match for 2020-21 to 2024-25 seasons.

Speaking on the decision to hold a debut double-header Community Shield, FA Chief Executive, Mark Bullingham said; “It’s a significant move to raise the bar higher by hosting both a women’s game and a men’s game in what’s set to be an exciting day with back-to-back football action.”

Spectators won’t be permitted to attend either matches physically in person but the FA “encourage supporters” to instead to watch these behind closed doors games at home, despite only the Women’s Community Shield being broadcast free-to-air.

BBC One however will have highlights of Liverpool’s clash against Arsenal in late evening on Saturday 29 August, with a timeslot yet to be announced.

When Do 2020-21 League Campaigns Begin?

WSL will commence their new season the following weekend with both Chelsea and Man City drawn away from home, as the Blues visit Manchester United whilst City will head to newly promoted Aston Villa.

Liverpool and Arsenal meanwhile will begin their new Premier League campaigns across the weekend of 12-14 September, with full fixtures for the season yet to be announced.
