2019-20 Sky Bet Championship: Week 46 Roundup

A dramatic midweek round of fixtures brought 2019-20 Sky Bet Championship’s regular season to a close as automatic promotion, play-off and relegation spots were all sorted.

West Brom entered their final game with promotion in their own hands ahead of Brentford, only to concede first when Ryan Manning’s rebound strike gave QPR a 35th minute lead at The Hawthorns.

Brentford therefore climbed to second on goal difference due to holding Barnsley to a goalless draw, until Callum Styles put the Tykes ahead from a poor clearance to swing the last promotion spot back to West Brom’s way.

The Baggies took full advantage as Grady Diangana pulled them level with QPR by turning in Robinson’s pass, before his own cross shortly after half-time was put away by Robinson to give West Brom the lead and a step closer towards promotion.

Eberechi Eze however provided a sting in West Brom’s tale with a 61st minute strike, offering Brentford late hope when Josh Dasilva’s left corner bender gave the Bees hope of grabbing a second to snatch the last automatic promotion spot.

Clarke Oduor however tapped in from Patrick Schmidt’s low cross to end the Bees’ promotion dreams and guarantee Barnsley’s safety, as West Brom clinched the last automatic promotion spot despite a 2-2 home draw against QPR.

Fulham had a outside chance of snatching promotion in the unlikely of scenarios but Neeskens Kebano’s free-kick could only rescue them a point against Wigan, who were relegated after a 12 point deduction was applied but still subject to appeal.

Hull’s faint survival hopes were destroyed in a three goal away loss at Cardiff, as the Bluebirds guaranteed a play-off spot in fifth whilst the Tigers are relegated to League One.

Charlton round out the relegation places and join Hull plus Wigan in League One next season, having suffered a brutal four goal loss away at Championship champions, Leeds United.

Luton completed their great escape with a dominant 3-2 victory over Blackburn, having been aided by two own goals from Hayden Carter and Bradley Johnson

Up in the play-off spots, Nottingham Forest suffered a brutal 4-1 loss at home to Stoke which was capped off by Nuno da Costa’s injury time own goal to ultimately concede the last play-off spot.

Swansea would be the recipients of Forest’s downfall after delivering a dominant 4-1 away win at ten-man Reading, snatching sixth position on goal difference and will play Brentford in the Play-Off semi-finals.

Elsewhere, Millwall battered Huddersfield to record a 4-1 win in the Terriers’ first game following Sunday’s shock sacking of Danny Cowley.

Sheffield Wednesday blew Jacob Murphy’s 17th minute opener as Paddy McNair equalized just minutes later, before Britt Assombalonga snatched Middlesbrough a late injury=time winner on the turn.

Derby County end the campaign in tenth position subject to a possible points deduction, following a 3-1 away win at Midlands rivals – Birmingham City.

Finally, Famara Diedhiou’s tap-in snatched Bristol City a point against Preston who had taken the lead through Sean Maguire.
