F1 Signs New Broadcasting Contract with Sky Deutschland From 2021

Formula One has agreed a new long-term exclusive Pay-TV broadcasting deal with Sky Deutschland, which begins next season and sees RTL replaced as Germany’s F1 broadcaster.

As part of the deal, Sky Deutschland will launch a new 24/7 channel dedicated solely to F1, with live coverage of all three practice sessions, Qualifying and race across each Grand Prix weekend with no commercial breaks during the race.

Millions of German F1 fans will therefore receive full coverage of every Grand Prix weekend with increased depth in coverage than previously available on RTL.

Sky Deutschland will make four races available free-to-view per season alongside a 30 minute highlights show, which will air after each race on Sky Sports News HD which is free-to-air.

More digital and social content is part of the deal which will be shared across Sky’s platforms, to allow access for millions of German fans beyond TV coverage.

Speaking on the signing of the new deal, Devesh Raj – CEO of Sky Germany said: “With our unique digital content offering and four races free for everyone every year, we will help introduce millions more people to the joy of F1 and help grow the sports across the motorsport country Germany.

Sky Sports F1 Germany will also benefit from Sky’s international production power, allowing unprecedented access to high-quality content on drivers and teams within factories as well as trackside and from F1’s archives.

There will be 800 hours of programming per year as part of the contract with 30 live hours of racing on a race weekend, whilst Sky Sport News Germany will air various documentaries, studio shows plus special programming.

Director of F1 Media Rights, Ian Holmes praised the “long-standing relationship” between F1 and Sky and hopes that as a team, they “will continue to build and strengthen the impressive quality of Sky’s programming, as well as their digital reach.”
