Dutch Grand Prix Organisers have announced that the 2020 Dutch GP has officially been cancelled, with a return to Zandvoort now set for 2021.
The announcement comes after weeks of discussion between organisers and F1 between holding the race without spectators, but it was decided to postpone until 2021 so that everyone “can celebrate this moment, the return of Formula 1 in Zandvoort, together with our racing fans in the Netherlands.”
This year’s race was initially scheduled for 1-3 May before being postponed due to Coronavirus pandemic.
Dutch GP Sporting Director, Jan Lammers therefore requests that fans be “patient” saying; “We were completely ready for this first race and we still are,” despite the postponement until 2021.
Organisers have confirmed that spectators can use their tickets for this year’s race when it is held next year, although refunds will be available if fans can’t attend next year.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen will therefore have to wait another year to race in front of his home fans, with the 2021 calendar not expected to be confirmed until late 2020 as Liberty Media focus on reorganising this year’s race calendar.
The decision to scrap this year’s trip to Zandvoort will also affect F2 and F3 who were set to attend as support races, as their race calendars continue to be decimated by the Coronavirus pandemic.
All previous Dutch Grands Prix have been held at Zandvoort between 1952-53, 1955, 1958-71 then from 1973-85 before falling off the calendar when the previous owners went out of business.
