2019-20 Sky Bet Championship: Week Seven Roundup

Having taken a fortnight break for international football, Leeds United made an instant return to the Sky Bet Championship summit on a weekend full of drama and entertainment.

League leaders, Swansea suffered their first defeat of the season after falling to a late Alfa Semedo strike from Lewis Grabban’s cross as Nottingham Forest took a slender away win.

Leeds therefore moved back top on goal difference after overcoming a feisty Yorkshire derby against Barnsley with a late Eddie Nketiah flick, before Mateusz Klich converted from the penalty spot to complete a 2-0 away victory over the Tykes who drop into the bottom three.

Charlton sit third but fell to a narrow defeat like Swansea after Jude Bellingham’s strike from Kerim Mrabti’s pullback proved the difference for Birmingham City, who climb to eighth.

Bristol City went fourth after a Famara Diedhiou second-half header and Tom Edwards own goal completed a comeback win over basement club – Stoke, having initially gone behind to Sam Clucas’ fourth minute strike before Joe Allen was sent off for a rough tackle on Josh Brownhill.

Sean Maguire and Tom Barkhuizen struck to send Preston fifth as the Lilywhites took a 2-0 home win over Brentford, whilst West Brom dropped to sixth following a 1-1 draw at Fulham who fell out of the Play-Off spots as a consequence.

Down in the relegation zone, Huddersfield are under new management of Dan Cowley but remain second bottom after losing 2-0 to Sheffield Wednesday who were playing their first match under Gary Monk.

Wigan escaped the bottom three after a thrilling encounter against Hull saw them take a 2-2 draw as goals from Chey Dunkley and Joe Gelhardt either side of Jarrod Bowen and Kamil Grosicki efforts for the Tigers saw both teams pick up a point apiece.

Elsewhere, QPR clung on for a 3-2 victory after a stunning Luton fightback from three goals down. Ebere Eze smashed the Hoops ahead before a Nakhi Wells double had the West Londoners in control after just 28 minutes

Joe Lumley then gave the ball away to Harry Cornick eight minutes later, who smashed into an empty net from 30 yards out before James Collins’ early second-half effort earned the Hatters an eventual second consolatory goal as QPR held on for all three points.

Blackburn and Middlesbrough both took home wins over Millwall and Reading respectively, as all four remain in the mid table placings.

Finally Derby were held by Cardiff in a 1-1 draw after Scott Malone’s sixth minute effort was cancelled out by a Robert Glatzel penalty just 13 minutes later.
