2018-19 Premier League: Week Two – Saturday

Last weekend saw the Premier League return in style with 25 goals across the opening round of fixtures, as Liverpool currently lead the way at top of table.

With teams now having had more time to gel, this weekend will surely start to provide a clearer picture of who are looking at a decent challenge and who faces the drop.

Highlights from Saturday’s games includes Newcastle’s trip to Cardiff before two London derbies as Tottenham meet Fulham then Chelsea face Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.

Cardiff City vs Newcastle United (12:30pm)

This fixture pits twin brothers against each other as Josh Murphy aims to help Cardiff clinch their first home win of new season against his twin – Jacob and Newcastle.

Last weekend, Newcastle put up a decent fight against Tottenham and were unlucky to not get at least a draw.

Cardiff on other hand seemed to struggle against a Bournemouth side who had a habit of losing opening Premier League games.

Given their squad quality, Cardiff probably need to make home games against fellow midfield teams count if want to survive, although I reckon Newcastle will prove too much if can carry across their impressive performance from last time out.

Prediction: Cardiff City 0-2 Newcastle United

Result: Cardiff City 0-0 Newcastle United

Everton vs Southampton

Everton were unlucky to not hold out for victory at Wolves last weekend but Southampton meanwhile lack in attack.

This game therefore will provide a real indicator of where Southampton are at because Everton will impose an attacking style that won’t be easy to cope with unlike that of Burnley last weekend.

I therefore can see a comfortable home win unless Alex McCarthy turns up and repeat what he did to Burnley.

Prediction: Everton 2-0 Southampton

Result: Everton 2-1 Southampton

Leicester vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

I have a feeling that this will be a fun game as both teams look set for a top ten scrap.

Both sides were impressive in how they reacted to going behind last weekend, although Leicester weren’t clinical enough with their chances.

Should Leicester turn up stronger and more resilient, I fancy them to get the win but only three of last ten meetings didn’t see both teams score.

Two of those were goalless draws but given how solid Wolves look, I am going to go for a score draw.

Prediction: Leicester City 1-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Jake predicts: Leicester City 2-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Result: Leicester City 2-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Tottenham Hotspur vs Fulham

This London derby should be really interesting given the amount that Fulham spent this summer, having achieved their promotion at Wembley in May.

As some players have already admitted, this squad needs time to gel but with Andre Schurrle and Aleksandar Mitrovic amongst their ranks, I am expecting the Cottagers to make life tough for Spurs.

Add in the fact that they clinched promotion here nearly three months ago and Fulham will fancy their chances of causing a shock.

Spurs meanwhile were difficult to beat at Wembley once hit their stride so I reckon they will just have the edge here.

Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Fulham

Jake predicts: Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Fulham

Result: Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 Fulham

West Ham United vs Bournemouth

After a dire performance at Liverpool, West Ham need a reaction here as likes of Carlos Sanchez and Lucas Perez make their home debut for the Hammers.

Bournemouth meanwhile picked up their first opening weekend win in top flight football last time out, so confidence will be high.

Match wise, this is pivotal if West Ham are to be serious contenders for an Europa League spot with fixtures against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United coming up.

Bournemouth however seem to enjoy this fixture because both teams have two wins apiece and there has been 12 goals from their six Premier League meetings.

This is a hard one to predict because the hosts need a reaction but Bournemouth are a solid side.

Ultimately though, the Cherries have lost their first away game of past three seasons so am going for a tight home win here.

Prediction: West Ham United 1-0 Bournemouth

Jake predicts: West Ham United 2-1 Bournemouth

Result: West Ham United 1-2 Bournemouth

Chelsea vs Arsenal (5:30pm)

Unai Emery again faces a tough test as his Arsenal side visit Chelsea as Maurizio Sarri makes his home debut at Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal need to come out and show some progress here after being battered by Manchester City, whilst Chelsea seem to be back to their best and ready for another title challenge.

If they don’t and struggle for few more games then this season could well become about consolidation, with Europa League being prioritised as main way back into Champions League.

Chelsea meanwhile are unbeaten in last six home league games against Arsenal and have a boss who only lost four out of 57 home games in charge of Napoli.

They therefore look like they could be difficult to beat at home so I am going for a Blues win here.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-0 Arsenal

Jake predicts: Chelsea 3-2 Arsenal

Result: Chelsea 3-2 Arsenal
