With majority of this week’s Carabao Cup ties settled, all that remains is Sunderland as they welcome Sheffield Wednesday to Stadium of Light for their first round clash.
Having met twice in Championship last season without taking a win en route to relegation, the Mackems will be hoping that they can dump the Owls out and cause a cupset.
Sunderland will be without several players for this clash including; Duncan Watmore (cruciate ligament), Aiden McGeady (calf), Jerome Sinclair (hamstring), Donald Love (ankle), Charlie Wyke (knee) and Tom Flanagan (knee).
Dylan McGeouch and Ethan Robson missed Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Luton Town with minor injuries and still remain doubts.
Sheffield Wednesday are expected to rest several players with Joe Wildsmith already confirmed in goal, replacing Cameron Dawson.
Atdhe Nuhiu is available after suspension and looks set to start.
- There has been just one League Cup meeting between these sides, coming at Hillsborough in September 2001 when Sheffield Wednesday ran out 4-2 winners.
- Sunderland are unbeaten in three of last four league meetings with all coming in Championship.
- Four of last five clashes saw both teams score.
- Sunderland last lost in opening round of this competition in 2006-07, whilst Wednesday have lost at this stage twice since that season.
Sunderland are unbeaten so far this season whilst Sheffield are yet to win and if the Owls make mass changes, I reckon it will be a home win.
Prediction: Sunderland 2-1 Sheffield Wednesday
