Today sees Middlesbrough take on Sheffield United as the Blades make the trip up north to The Riverside Stadium.
Middlesbrough will be hoping to pick up all three points as they kick off their first home game of the season against Sheffield United.
It’s the exact same fixture as when the two clubs met last season when former Middlesbrough manager Garry Monk kicked off his first home game as manager against the Blades.
Boro won the game 1-0 thanks to a Rudy Gestede first half header but were lucky to escape with all three points after Sheffield United had a goal disallowed for offside in the final minutes of the game.
Tony Pulis will be without a number of first team players for today’s game after facing a few hectic days at The Riverside.
Boro will be certainly be without Daniel Ayala and Rudy Gestede as they recover from injuries and could also be without midfielder Paddy McNair as the former Sunderland man missed the clubs last game against Millwall.
Middlesbrough will almost certainly be without winger and star man Adama Traore as the U21 Spanish international closes on a move to newly promoted Wolves for a club record deal of £18m.
After changing the game against Millwall at the weekend in a 2-2 draw youngsters Marcus Tavernier, Ashley Fletcher and Lewis Wing will be pushing for starts tonight.
Tavernier and Wing will be hoping to start after the pair grabbed an assist each in Boro’s late comeback.
Sheffield United on the other hand have no fresh injury concerns to report after their defeat against Swansea at the weekend.
Striker Billy Sharp and on-loan winger Ben Woodburn will both be pushing for starts after coming off the bench at the weekend.
- Middlesbrough have won their second league fixture of the season in six of the last seven seasons, losing only in 2014-15 against Leeds United.
- Middlesbrough have won four of their last five home matches against Sheffield United in all competitions.
Personally I think today’s game will be a close fought encounter, after a week of transfer turmoil the Boro players on the pitch will be hoping to show their fans there is reason to be optimistic and put on a show for the fans who come down tonight.
Sheffield United will on the other hand will be looking to get their first points on the board after a disappointing opening defeat against Swansea City.
I reckon today’s game will be won and lost in midfield but think Middlesbrough will just edge today’s game with Lewis Wing pulling the strings in midfield.
Prediction: Middlesbrough 1-0 Sheffield United
Result: Middlesbrough 3-0 Sheffield United
