2017-18 UEFA Champions League: Last 16 – Wednesday

After a dramatic start to the knockout stages, we now turn our attention to two corkers of the draw.

Liverpool head to Porto unbeaten against their Portuguese opposition, whilst two of the bookmakers’  title favourites collide as Real Madrid meet PSG.

Porto vs Liverpool

Liverpool training

Liverpool enter this clash as favourites, having lost just twice in all competitions since late October in all competitions.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds are the third best scoring team in Europe with 94 goals, only behind Manchester City (107) and PSG (119).

There has just been four meetings between these sides with this leg finishing as draws (2000-01 UEFA Cup, 0-0 & 2007-08 CL group stage, 1-1) , before Liverpool comfortably dispatched Porto at home in both second legs.

Klopp’s main concern has to be Liverpool’s away form in European competition under him.

From nine away trips across this and 2015-16 Europa League (after Klopp took over on 8th October 2015), the Merseysiders have a (W2 D6 L1) record with both wins coming against teams starting with M.

Prediction wise, although this Liverpool side is strong I can see a draw here given their away record under Klopp on the big stage.

Prediction: Porto 1-1 Liverpool

Result: Porto 0-5 Liverpool

Real Madrid vs PSG

This clash pitches two of the world’s greatest players head to head as Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid welcome Neymar and PSG to Santiago Bernabeu.

PSG are running away in Ligue One whilst Real need a victory here as Zinedine Zidane continues to fight for his job.

Whilst Unai Emery’s French side netted 24 goals in Group A, none of their players scored in every game like Ronaldo (7) managed for Real in a tricky Group H.

PSG and Neymar also have mixed records against the reigning champions.

Record against Real Madrid Wins Draws Losses Goals
PSG 0 1 1 0
Neymar 4 1 3 3

PSG’s defeat came here in the 2015-16 group stage, after drawing 0-0 in Paris.

Neymar meanwhile has a mixed record against his former El Classico rival, but has sat out the last clash.

This time, they’re a lot stronger so I reckon this will be a lively draw.

Prediction: Real Madrid 2-2 PSG

Result: Real Madrid 3-1 PSG
