2017-18 UEFA Champions League Group Stage 6 – Wednesday

The very final batch of group games in the UEFA Champions League are upon us.

Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are already through as group winners.

Liverpool however await their fate in a three way battle to escape group E.

Liverpool vs Spartak Moscow

Liverpool know that anything other than defeat will see them through. Spartak Moscow however will qualify if they win.

Both could qualify if Moscow win whilst Sevilla loses at NK Maribor.

Here is how group E table stands after five games as a guide to how tight it is.

Team Points Goal Difference
Liverpool 9 +10
Sevilla 8 0
Spartak Moscow 6 +3

This is Spartak’s second meeting at Anfield so will be hoping for a better performance than in October 2002.

That meeting saw they suffer a crushing 5-0 defeat but Liverpool’s current Champions League form will offer them hope.

Liverpool have struggled in Europe with five of their last seven games ending in draws, offering Spartak a chance to cause an upset.

The first leg in Moscow ended 1-1 but this time, I expect both teams to fight hard with so much on line.

In the end, I think Mohamed Salah will be the difference here to send Liverpool through as group winners.

Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Spartak Moscow

Result: Liverpool 7-0 Spartak Moscow

Shakhtar Donetsk vs Manchester City

Manchester City are already through as group F winners so can afford to rest up here.

That is unlikely though, given that they are unbeaten in all competitions this season.

Donetsk on other hand need just a point to qualify as runner up and are unbeaten at home so far in group stage.

Throw in the fact that none of City’s Champions League games have ended goalless, we could have a good match in store.

If it’s 1-1 entering last ten minutes, there will only be one winner.

Prediction: Shakhtar Donetsk 1-2 Manchester City

Result: Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 Manchester City

Tottenham Hotspur vs Apoel Nicosia

Tottenham know that a draw will see them through to the last 16 as group H winners.

Mauricio Pochettino however is resting key players including; Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Eric Dier.

Even without them, this will be an easy win because no Cypriot side has won on English soil or an away game in Champions League era.

Although key players are not playing, I expect a comfortable win if ignore fact that the previous two home games in this competition ended 3-1.

Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 Apoel Nicosia

Result: Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 Apoel Nicosia
