This weekend saw Formula One land in Mexico for the Mexican Grand Prix weekend.
All Lewis Hamilton needed to do was finish in top five or nine, depending on which 1/2 position Vettel finished in.
Meanwhile. there are plenty of other things to talk about.
Hamilton seals title
Since Brazil moved to late season, the general rule is don’t let the title fight be alive at Interlagos, unless want possibility of rain.
After a slightly underperforming weekend from Hamilton, he actually benefitted from Vettel colliding with him at the third corner.
That meant that if Vettel wanted the required minimum of second, he would have to be third by lap 50 to stand even a small chance of achieving that.
Alas, he failed to do just this meaning that the title was Hamilton’s, even though he took two points.
That means that Hamilton and Vettel now both have four world championship titles apiece.
Toro Rosso nightmare
This weekend has been Toro Rosso’s worst weekend without a doubt.
Friday practice saw the team encounter engine problems with Brendon Hartley.
Saturday however was torrid for Pierre Gasly, whose engine malfunctioned after one lap of third practice.
He had already sat FP1 out for Sean Gelael so was on back foot and ended up also missing qualifying with that engine failure.
Thankfully for Gasly, Sunday saw the technical gremlins choose Hartley’s power unit over his.
In summary, an awful weekend that all but ends their hopes of fifth in constructors table.
Perez delivers at home
With this being his home race, Sergio Perez had plenty of reasons to get fight hard this weekend
Throughout practice, he was faster than teammate Esteban Ocon.
When it came to crunch, the Frenchman outqualified him by 0.370s leaving them sixth and tenth respectively.
Race day brought even better success with a seventh place finish, his best ever result here since it returned to calendar in 2015.
It could of been a podium, if things had turned out how it was at end of lap one and he managed to pass Nico Hulkenberg then Ocon let him pass for third.
That and Ocon’s best ever result of fifth place secured another fourth in the Constructors’ championship for Force India.
The team again secured another double points finish, having done same in 2015 & 16.
Renault’s nip and tuck
Renault’s Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz have been evenly matched all weekend.
The closest gap between both drivers was 0.02s in FP1 but the gap has consistently been tight.
Sunday however saw all that undone through various factors from Hulkenberg retiring with an ERS issue to Sainz needing an early pit stop and struggling to recover before retiring.
Either way, this is a clear indicator of what to expect at Renault in Brazil, Abu Dhabi and next season.
