D Day

D Day has arrived for Wales and Republic of Ireland in Group D’s play off race.

With England through and Scotland favourites to join Northern Ireland in the play-offs, attention shifts to Group D and the two other home nations – Wales and Republic of Ireland (ROI)

Both teams are four and five points respectively behind group leaders, Serbia with two games left to play. That means one is definitely guaranteed at least a play off spot.

Georgia vs Wales

Wales head to Georgia without star man, Gareth Bale who is out with a calf injury.

Chris Coleman’s main worry has to be discipline because seven players could miss Monday’s showdown with ROI. Those players include; Aaron Ramsay, Ben Davies and Ashley Williams.

The first fixture in Cardiff ended 1-1 but was the first time in their four meetings that they avoided defeat.

All of this fixture’s first three meetings went Georgia’s way, including a 5-0 thrashing back in 1994.

Since then, things have been much tighter so am expecting a competitive and tense battle here.

Wales need the points but with disciplinary and injury issues, I can only see a draw here.

Prediction: Georgia 1-1 Wales

Result: Georgia 0-1 Wales

Republic of Ireland vs Moldova

Republic of Ireland know that a draw for Wales and their own victory will put them in the driving seat for Monday night.

Their visitors are basement club, Moldova and will be a decent starting test for new call-ups; Scott Hogan, Sean Maguire and Aiden O’Brien.

There isn’t any history between these teams and ROI comfortably won the reverse fixture in Moldova 3-1.

With that in mind and the importance of victory, I expect the Irish to get the three points here.

Prediction: ROI 3-0 Moldova

Result: ROI 2-0 Moldova
