After Manchester City and Tottenham won whilst Liverpool drew on Tuesday night, Celtic, Chelsea and Manchester United take centre stage away from home in Wednesday’s action.
Atletico Madrid vs Chelsea
This match promises to be competitive with Chelsea containing five Spanish players.
Atletico however have welcomed Diego Costa back into their fold, having completed his resigning from Chelsea. He however won’t be able to play till January when the Spanish club can register him.
That is bound to not stop him from divulging lessons learned last season under Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge. Should he indeed give advice, expect a tough test for the Blues.
Chelsea keeper, Thibaut Courtois spent three seasons on loan at the home side under Diego Simeone from 2011-14. During that period, he helped them knock his current side out of this competition at the semi final stage (2013-14).
Either way, this will be a tough fixture for both teams so I am going for a draw here.
Prediction: Atletico Madrid 1-1 Chelsea
Result: Atletico Madrid 1-2 Chelsea
CSKA Moscow vs Manchester United
Jose Mourinho will be quietly confident here despite Manchester United’s worrying away form.
The Red Devils’ midfield will be slightly depleted with; Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini and Paul Pogba missing through injury.
A positive is that Man Utd are yet to lose in Russia and are unbeaten against CSKA (W2 D2).
Their away form however leaves a lot to be desired with only one away win in Europe since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, back in November 2013 vs Bayer Leverkusen.
Despite their faults, Man U are unbeaten so far this season and I can see that dodgy away run ending here.
Prediction: CSKA Moscow 0-2 Manchester United
Result: CSKA Moscow 1-4 Manchester United
Anderlecht vs Celtic
Both teams were comfortably dispatched in week one by Bayern Munich and PSG respectively.
Celtic’s biggest concern has to be the fact that they haven’t won in Europe for 16 group stage games now dating back to 22nd October 2013, when beat Ajax 2-1 at home.
Anderlecht on other hand are unbeaten in last seven European home matches. Unfortunately, that doesn’t extend to the Champions League, where they have won just one home game and lost six.
Celtic might have a strong home record vs Belgian clubs but are winless in Belgium on three previous visits.
Given how poor both teams are record wise, this has 0-0 written all over it but Brendan Rogers will certainly get a magical moment out of his side here.
Prediction: Anderlecht 0-1 Celtic
Result: Anderlecht 0-3 Celtic
