Red vs Blue clubs: Round Two

This weekend, Sky has a red vs blue Premier League club theme running throughout all of their live games.

Last night saw Bournemouth beat Brighton and the next round of red vs blue clubs sees Southampton travel to Crystal Palace in the lunchtime match.

Palace are under new management, having sacked Frank de Boer on Monday. With Roy Hodgson in charge, can the Eagles finally fly out of the danger zone with first win and goal/s?

Team News

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and James Tomkins have recovered from minor injuries so could feature.

Mamadou Sakho is expected to be on bench at best, after playing 45 minutes in a development match on Monday.

Southampton could recall Virgil van Dijk from his exile for the first time since January.

Saints midfielder, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is missing this trip, after his wife gave birth to a girl this week.

Instant impact needed?

Crystal Palace need Hodgson to make an instant impact because another defeat could bite them come May.

Their home form at Selhurst Park this calendar year has been woeful with just six games without loss (W5 D1) in all competitions. That must change if they’re to stand any chance of being in the top flight this time next year.

History could also await them here if they lose without scoring because nobody is yet to lose their opening five games to a season without scoring in the top flight.

Hodgson might be 70 years old but he has plenty of experience both domestically and internationally. If he can utilise all of that experience and play to Palace’s strengths then they should have a chance at staying up.

Christian Benteke could help because he has scored in every appearance against Southampton.

Ultimately, the full impact probably won’t come here but in terms of home record, instant impact is needed ASAP before teams start seeing this ground as easy wins.

Draw on cards?

Like Palace, Southampton have struggled to find the net so is a draw on the cards?

Nine of their last 12 league matches have seen the Saints draw blanks with four of those goalless games coming this season.

They have however played two London clubs so far at home with a second week win over West Ham and a loss to Watford last weekend. This is their first away trip to London of the season so will that end well?

Prediction

This match is tough to call because both teams have issues in front of goal.

The Eagles have won their last two home games vs Southampton but I feel that their home record and goal scoring crisis will cost them here.

Prediction: Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton

Jake predicts: Crystal Palace 2-1 Southampton

Result: Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton
