Tottenham Hotspur move into their new temporary home at Wembley Stadium this weekend. They however won’t be happy with the first guests – Chelsea, who pipped them to the title last season.
Spurs full back, Kieran Trippier faces a late fitness test to see if he can return from an ankle injury.
Mauricio Pochettino however remains without the injured trio of Danny Rose, Erik Lamela and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou.
At Chelsea, it seems to be one back and two out on the suspension front. Victor Moses is available after serving his one match ban. Captain Gary Cahill however visits the suspension list along with Cesc Fabregas for company.
Pedro is a doubt but Antonio Conte could welcome summer signing, Tiemoue Bakayoko into the fold. Bakayoko has been out injured but returned to training this week alongside attacker, Eden Hazard.
Conte has ruled Hazard out of this match as a precaution.
Wembley hoodoo a threat?
Wembley hasn’t been kind to Tottenham in recent years with only one win in their nine trips to the new Wembley. Could that hoodoo be their undoing particularly against Chelsea, who have beaten them here on three occasions?
The Blues have also only lost two of their last 17 clashes across all competitions with Tottenham.
Spurs’ home record last season at White Hart Lane was remarkable with no defeats and can set a new club record of 15 league home wins, if can get another here.
This will be a proper test for both teams for many reasons making this prediction interesting.
Tottenham will want a winning start in their new home and Harry Kane could net his 100th Tottenham goal. He is however yet to score in the month of August.
Chelsea won’t want a repeat of how they started the 1973-74 season when they lost their opening two fixtures. One of those defeats then came against Burnley and the Blues finished 17th whilst the Clarets wrapped up sixth come that season’s end. Could history be about to repeat itself?
Antonio Conte has seen seven of his eight Premier League defeats come in London making this match probably a must win in his mind.
On that note, I expect Spurs to have plenty of firepower within him to beat Chelsea and compound their nightmare start even further.
Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Chelsea
Jake predicts: Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Chelsea
Result: Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Chelsea
