Newcastle on March

After Huddersfield and Reading both suffered defeats on Saturday, Newcastle United have the chance to secure an instant return to the Premier League.

They must however overcome a strong Preston team, who have been unlucky in recent weeks after facing those around them.

Team News

Rafa Benitez will have to make do without Dwight Gayle as the ex Crystal Palace star, nurses a hamstring issue.

Defender, Ciaran Clark is near full fitness again but won’t feature in this match.

Preston North End are without defenders, Tom Clarke and Greg Cunningham for the rest of this season due to injury.

Alex Baptiste and Ben Pearson are still serving suspensions.

Everton loanee, Tyias Browing has resumed training so could come off the bench in the latter stages.

Stage is Newcastle’s

With automatic promotion in sight, the stage is set for Newcastle to do it at the first time of asking.

The Magpies might of struggled lately but Monday night home games has been a strong point for them.

Out of their last 31 home games on a Monday, they have only lost two so could this be a positive omen?

Preston haven’t won on their last five trips to St James Park, including a League Cup defeat earlier this season.

They have shifted three goals in each of their last three matches so expect a tough battle to stop that rot.

Everything is lining up in Newcastle’s favour and they should get the job done here and escape the Sky Bet Championship.

The match will be tough given how poor both sides have been lately.

Unlike the Lilywhites, the Toon Army have something left to play for so expect them to come through late on and join Brighton next season.

Prediction: Newcastle 2-0 Preston North End

Result: Newcastle 4-1 Preston North End
