Tonight might be Valentine Day but for football fans, it also sees the Champions League return from winter hibernation. To kick the knockout stages off, Barcelona travel to PSG whilst Borussia Dortmund head to Benfica.
PSG vs Barcelona
Barcelona are heading to the Parc des Prince on a high after Saturday’s thrashing of Alaves. PSG however will be confident of another strong result after breezing past Bordeaux at the weekend.
Unai Emery knows the visitors well from his Sevilla days in La Liga. His record against Barca is poor but his first win came last season in Seville, so expect him to take heart and maximise the better quality at PSG to full effect.
These sides have met before in the knockouts with the Catalonians progressing on each occasion. The French side are yet to keep a clean sheet against tonight’s opposition so expect a few goals to set up a competitive return leg at the Nou Camp.
Prediction: PSG 2-3 Barcelona
Result: PSG 4-0 Barcelona
Benfica vs Borussia Dortmund
This match should probably be one sided given Borussia Dortmund’s superior quality over the home side.
Benfica scraped through to this stage by one point but face a Dortmund side who cruised through to top their group.
There is however hope because the visitors have been on a nightmare run of form since December with only two wins in their last nine across all competitions. This could give the Gloriosos a chance of springing a surprise tonight and taking something back to Signal Iduna Park next month.
Both sides have met once before back when the tournament was known as the European Cup. The meeting occurred in the 1963/64 first round with the German side winning 6-2 on aggregate.
The match should be competitive but Dortmund will be keen to try and at least get a draw given their recent form.
Prediction: Benfica 1-1 Borussia Dortmund
Result: Benfica 1-0 Borussia Dortmund
