Crunch Championship matches 29th December

Tonight sees two crunch matches at both ends of the Championship table. Aston Villa hosts Leeds whilst Rotherham do battle with Burton Albion at bottom. Every club will be looking to enter 2017 on a high so this weekend is critical for momentum.

Aston Villa vs Leeds (Sky Sports 1, 7:45, KO)

This match pits two sides eying a play off spot against each other. Aston Villa have been in scrappy form through December and will be looking to derail Leeds’ challenge.

Villa have collected nine points in comparison to their visitor’s 12 across their last five games. They will be looking to make it three wins on the bounce, which hasn’t been achieved since 2010. Their defence is quite unpredictable because you never know when they will keep a clean sheet or not.

Leeds are however flying and will look to push on in their play off hunt. They are currently eight points off automatic promotion so could they get in the automatic promotion mix?

Garry Monk will be happy with how this month has turned out and has a great forward in Kemar Roofe finally showing his true talent. I expect to see Roofe and Wood heavily involved tomorrow and will see off a unstable Villa team.

Prediction: Aston Villa 0-2 Leeds United

Result: Aston Villa 1-1 Leeds United

Rotherham United vs Burton Albion

This is a massive match for both sides. Rotherham need to win as many home games as possible, if they are to stay up. Burton are however looking to pull away from the drop zone with victory.

Burton beat the Millers’ in their last meeting at the Pirelli Stadium at start of December. They have lost every match since meaning that this match is vital to getting back on track. The home side has however won two in the same period and will be looking to push Nigel Clough closer to the sack with the three points.

Both sides have scored plenty of goals but their defending has left a lot to desire this season. This could be key in the latter stages of the game if either side are to take a step closer to safety.

Prediction: Rotherham 1-1 Burton

Result: Rotherham 1-2 Burton
